Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastagir Khan said that Alibaba can become an important part of Pakistan’s digital economy.
President of Alibaba Group Michael Evans also said that Pakistan is a high potential market.
These announcements came after a meeting between the two officials in Karachi. Secretary Commerce, Secretary and Chairman Board of Investment, Secretary Finance, State Bank, FBR and Commercial Bank Representatives also attended the meeting.
Dastagir maintained that e-commerce and digital platforms have facilitated cross border businesses and have reduced transactional costs. This has allowed small and medium enterprises to find customers across the world along with provision of economic improvement.
Evans stated that Alibaba is interested in starting operations in Pakistan.
He also said that his platform will offer services to the local businesses which will not only boost their sales but will also create room for millions of jobs in the economy.
