According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is planning to spend around $1 Billion over the next year for original content. This amount is equal to half of what HBO spent in 2016 on its original content. Apple seems to make a splash in Hollywood and compete with the likes of Game of Thrones in terms of viewership and popularity.
Apple’s first original show was launched in June 2016. The show named “Planet of the Apps” presents episodes where entrepreneurs pitch their apps for 60 seconds in front of celebrity advisors. However, the show has received mediocre reviews. According to PCMag’s Chandra Steele,
“40 minutes of discussions about products that are best viewed on a smartphone screen is not exactly must-see TV.”
Apple’s second original show, “Carpool Karaoke” has also received indifferent reviews. The show hit the TV screens last week with pairs of celebrities sharing a ride. The celebrities enjoyed their playlists during the ride and shared candid moments with the fans.
Apple can produce up to 10 TV shows next year with this budget reckons The Wall Street Journal. But will they stack up against the likes of “Games of Thrones”? I think with their marketing resources and global reach, Apple just needs to keep toying with content. Eventually they will get to the content that can produce viewership and popularity they are looking for.
