Business Insider published news about two startup founders quietly creating the new obsession for the publishing industry. Oprah’s Book Club for millennials was launched in 2012 by former NBC producer Danielle Wiesberg and Carly Zakin. Called theSkimm, it is a daily sum-up of top headlines rewritten for millennial audiences. The motto for the startup is “making it easier to be smarter.”
Since its launch, the newsletter has added many new features including SkimmReads book recommendation engine that is being called the next iteration of the wildly popular Oprah’s Book Club. Zakin said that they launched this startup during summer weekends when they were always looking for things to read. The book recommendations by the startup now come in newsletter every Friday and have proved to be massively efficient in driving sales.
Director of Publicity at HarperCollins Victoria Comella said,
“The startup has turned into a holy grail for book publicists.”
She added that it directs the highest demography of book readers in the modern times. TheSkimm has established itself as the tastemaker of trends and is going strong in the word-of-mouth buzz as well.
