Uber has had a strict reputation for not including tip payments to drivers within its app. However, that is going to change since the company has made an announcement that it will introduce a new rule requiring tip payment in tandem with the Uber’s method of payment.
The announcement of testing in-app tipping features came from the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, and will begin from the New York City. If the experiment is successful, then Uber might decide to build a standardized app instead of including different features for different areas.
In a statement, Uber said that tipping could create bias among riders and drivers and that means drivers would spend more time in wealthier neighborhoods.
In most parts of the world, Uber is a cashless experience. Riders use their e-wallets to make payments. In Pakistan, it is still a cash involving transaction for the most part, but with other similar services allowing for credit cards, Uber is likely to shift to e-payments here too. The point to note here is that if the tips are to be included in the overall payment for the ride, its mechanism has to be included in the app as well.
Uber’s drivers have traditionally been deprived of the usual benefits that the regular workers usually get, including sick leaves, minimum wage etc. At such time, these tipping rules are much needed and will likely help the company in keeping their drivers happy.
